PACER CENTER — Public Policy & Legislation

Our Commitment

Part of PACER Center’s commitment to children with disabilities includes ensuring that the state and federal laws protecting the rights of people with disabilities remain strong. PACER works in coalition with other disability organizations to support special education laws and other related legislation.

2024 State Legislative Priorities

Increasing Parental Access and Empowerment in the Education Process

PACER Center supports proposals that increase parents’ ability to access and participate in IEP, alternative dispute resolution, and appeal processes that are less expensive and do not require legal representation.

Increasing Student Inclusion and Reduction of Exclusionary Discipline Practices

PACER Center supports initiatives that fully include all students regardless of their individual needs and legislation that limits harmful disciplinary practices.

Increasing Access to Educational Services including Transportation and Medication

PACER Center supports full inclusion of students with disabilities by ensuring that students with disabilities who are open enrolled in another school district receive necessary special transportation services as listed in their IEPs and ensuring that students receive medically prescribed medication during the school day.

Video: Working for Change Using the Power of Personal Story

When parents try to improve services for all children with disabilities, not just their own child,—this is called advocating for systems change. This webinar will explain how parents of children with disabilities can help change systems by telling their own personal stories. By sharing a personal story with the right people, parents can help improve services and supports for children with disabilities and their families.
