PACER Center’s Leadership Academy was created in 2008 and includes a framework for educators to use to provide support, resources, and knowledge to enhance optimal academic and transition success for high school students with disabilities.
Career opportunities in technology are projected to keep increasing in the future, but individuals with disabilities are under-represented in these fields. School districts can enhance the success of their students with disabilities, both academically during high school and through transition to college and STEM career options, by providing them with support through models like the Leadership Academy.
The Leadership Academy model provides a structure that includes workshop topics related to technology and assistive technology. It also offers online resources on college transition and careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The Academy also outlines how to incorporate job-shadow experiences for students that can help develop their leadership and self-advocacy skills while working with professionals in STEM careers, and offers resources for parents to use to support their child. Additional resources are available for educators to enhance their knowledge of assistive technology and technology resources. For more information, contact the Simon Technology Center at 952-838-9000 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
