PACER workshop addresses charter schools and special education

PACER Center is offering “Charter Schools and Special Education,” a free workshop for parents whose children have disabilities and for professionals. It is on Thursday, April 2, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Children’s Home Society & Family Services, 1605 Eustis St., St. Paul, Minn. Advance registration is requested.

Half of Minnesota’s public charter schools are in the Twin Cities. As recipients of federal funds, such schools must follow federal and state laws.

Participants will learn about:

  • Federal and state laws regarding charter schools
  • Questions for parents to ask when considering charter school enrollment
  • Evaluation
  • Communication
  • The Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504
  • Accommodations

This workshop also gives parents an opportunity to network with parents of other children with disabilities who attend charter schools.

To register, call PACER at 952-838-9000 or 952-838-0190 (TTY). In Greater Minnesota, call 800-537-2237 (toll free) or visit the PACER Web site at PACER.org.

PACER Center is a parent center for families of children and young adults with any disability. PACER provides individual assistance, workshops, publications, and other resources to help families make decisions about education and other services for their child or young adult with disabilities.
